The Icknield Way Limited Edition Fine Art Print by Spencer Gore.
Oil on canvas; painted in 1912. The Icknield Way is an ancient trackway that goes from Norfolk to Wiltshire. It proceeds along the escarpment and includes the Berkshire Downs and the Chiltern Hills. All the assimilated hallmarks of Gore’s experience in France can be found here: his visits to exhibitions by both Gauguin and Cézanne, their use of strong colour and thick paint, and their emphasis on geometric and sometimes distorted forms. With its heat of colour, reflected both in the sky and the receding fields, this is very much amongst the best of Gore’s work.
